Support the Civil Rights of People with Disabilities

Institutionalization remains a serious problem for people with disabilities.

United Spinal supports the Disability Integration Act (S. 117/H.R. 555) which addresses this serious problem by specifying in Federal Statute that people with disabilities have a federally protected right to a real choice in how and where they receive community services and supports.

The Disability Integration Act supports the civil rights of people with disabilities to live in the community in the following ways:

  • ensuring that you have a real choice in how you receive services and supports without any discrimination;
    making sure that your state and insurance providers deliver services and supports in a way that you choose – where you live and how you get your services and supports – so that you can lead an independent life;
  • states must develop plans to increase the availability of affordable and accessible private and public housing for individuals with disabilities.
  • establishing stronger, targeted enforcement mechanisms to ensure timely development and implementation of your services and supports in agreed-to transition plans.
